Moulin Rouge!

Satine from Moulin Rouge! has the most amazing costumes, a collection of corsets, underwear, gowns and indian inspired outfits.

One of the best Romantic Films in my mind, Directed by Baz Luhrman, But what interest me more, are the Costume Designers, Catherine Martin and Angus Strathie. Catherine is an Australian Costume, Production and Set Designer, She is also the Wife of Baz Luhrman (The Director).

Catherine designed the set of Moulin Rouge and Co-Designed the Costumes, The other designer was Angus Strathie, Who won an achademy award for best costume design in 2001.

Moulin Rouge! is set in the 1900's, The costumes were inspired by when Catherine was working on 'A Midsummers night dream' in India and visited a Bollywood movie. This you can see in the ending, The indian inspired costumes.

In the 1900's it was the rise of haute couture, featuring fitted gowns and pinched in waists like an hourglass became popular again, a full bossom was fashionable.
Throughout the film, tight corsets, curvy women and a bohemian style of costume and fashion.

The costumes in this film are vivid and fun, costume changes are in an abundance, especially the women. The set design and Cast choice compliment the story line and costume choice well.

Also Moulin Rouge!is always a great basis for costume partys and amazing refrence and inspiration. I get alot of inspiration and influences from my favourite films.

This is The Fallen, Not my usuall style but undernialy interesting, Further into the Clip with the parachute scene is creative and reveals the reasoning behind the title, The Fallen. Completley different in many ways, the music and almost dark feeling to the whole composition.

Shopping inspiration for assignment

Gaining inspiration for a assignment at uni, These pictures are from a boutique in Coventry, GladRags. I find inspiration from their bleeched and dip dyed levi's and kitsch customised hangers.
I have to do a how to, up cycle, customisation on garments, accessories or products as part of this, I am thinking Dungareese, Bleeching, Violet dye and press studs.

Clothes Show Live Design

At around Christmas time we were set a project at university, The cltohes show live competition. That was a while ago but after doing the work, sketchbooks, final design and everything in December time, I now have to hand it into university to be graded. Luckily since christmas my photoshop and illustrator skils have improved in leaps and bounds. The design concept is the same but the finish and presentation has improved.

Celeb Endorsement Project, Alix of Bohemia

Researching 'Alix of Bohemia' For a University Project, Finding a Celeb for an endorsement to open a retail and cafe shop. Stumbling across this designer by accident but using her as my choice seemed appropriate due to her charitable nature and uniqueness of custom comissions and a head for buisness and ethical vaues.

Photographer Tim Walker

Watching Adverts on You Tube, Advertisement and Promotion interests me, so watching different clips inspires me.

This one caught my eye, Photographer Tim Walker, Using huge roses and the idea of people being tiny, reminds me of the borrowers, But stylish! The set with the door is genius and the poses of the models could be doll like to match the proposed size of them.

Bernard Blossac Illustrator

One of my Favourite books on my shelf, is '100 years of fashion Illustration' by Cally Blackman.
This book is amazing, I got it as a present when I decided to do fashion at university, so I would recomend this to anyone!
Bernard Blossac was one of the first illustrators that caught my eye, these ones feature in the book and are from 1949, illustrations of Jacques Fath for a Private collection. The couple worked well together, Blossac's illustrations had a nervous yet prominant feel to it, which complimented Fath's bold designs.

Created from pencil and watercolour, So simple and incredibly effective. This is raw talent wich interests me, nothing showing off, just what you see.

I love using watercolour to design and illustrate and looking at these, inspire me to do so. The book, Fashion Drawing in Vogue is also where he is seen, illustrating the latest fashions in 1945 and relevant in fashion today and fashion illustrations.

Colleen Atwood Alice in Wonderland Designer

Colleen Atwood, Costume Designer for Tim Burton's 'Alice in Wonderland'.
(Also Sweeny Todd, Mission Impossible, Chicago to name a few)

Unrecognisable compared to the original well know Alice in Wonderland Costume, The costumes would not work if the extensive Hair and Make up was taken away.

If only the costumes of the Alice in Wonderland were this fantastic when I was a child. Designing those costumes must have been extravigant and an honour to do.

The costumes through out the film change so often, and sre so different, yet flow well from one to another.

This is one of my favourite films reguarding costumes, Along with Chicago, The same Costume Designer.

The Love of Dr Martens

For the first of my blogs on my style influence, I thought of writing about something close to me to begin. I have been wearing Dr Martens for years. I have a Original pink pair, which were my first and now a aubergene pair of 1460 W Boots, and recently have been reading the history of Dr Martens out of interest, where to my surprise, The introduction was written by Jon Peel. Where I come from, A Small Town in Suffolk, around a year ago a John Peel Arts centre opened, and for a small area of the country to be named (Ipswich area) in the book is unusual.

When you buy a pair of Martens, you will literally have them for life! (And the longer you have them, the softer and even more comfortable they get.)

'Everyone's an individual'

Bands over the years, such as Madness, They would in 1974, call themselfs Aldenahm Glamour Boys and spray paint their Dr Martens, import levi 501's but didnt come together as a band untill 1976.  Other famous bands, like Blur, Red Hot Chilli Peppers were proud owners of wearing the boots.

'Take only pictures, Leave only footprints, Kill only time'

My experience with the boots was a much more suberban one, Having then as a gift from my mother one christmas at 16. I never spray painted mine, wanted to get them dirty, nor even wanted to make a statement. However when my first pair were a matt baby pink with one black lace and one bright yeallow lace, you do draw attention. But at 16, with spiky platinum hair and a nose ring, I thought I looked top dog!
Now however, those pink Dr Martens are covered in paint spatters, scuffs and mud, how they should be.

To my family and friends dissbelief, I think that my boots go with everything, dresses, jeans and skirts, not to mention shorts and maxi dresses. And to my boyfriends horror, I do wear them with everything and anything!
Once you own a pair you will literally never go back to other boots, Yes they cost a bit of dollar, and yes they are heavy on your feet, but oh very comfortable indeed!

The History of Dr Martens (Dr Maertens)

The genius who invented these, or geniuses, Started in Britain in 1900's Benjamin Griggs and Septimus Jones made shoes; they had a boot making partnership. Benjamin and his family took over the business making bulldog boots.
Whereas Dr Klaus Maertens, was a young soldier in Munich who gained a foot injury. Conjuring up a remedy for his problem, air filled material.
Dr Herbert Funck from Luxemburg and Dr Klaus Maerten met previously at university, the joint interest of the shoes created a partnership with the idea of trading to the American Military.
While in Britain, teenagers and 'teddy boy's' were the beginnings of the modern youth culture. Benjamin Griggs saw Klaus Maerten and Herbert Funk's adverts which immediately made him interested. So all in all, Benjamin then acquired the licence to make air soles on boots or 'AirWair' as we know it.
Over the years the design has altered and even though the name Dr Maerten has lived, has been adapted to be spelt, Marten.
